Basic SEO for ProStores: Your Home Page
You’ve created your ProStores web store, added products and images, and are ready to sell. Now what? Traffic generation is one of our merchants' top concerns, and there seems to be confusion about what ProStores does to help. This new series of posts on effective SEO strategies will help you drive more traffic to your web store and potentially improve conversion rates.
This first post covers the first page your customers see when visiting your web store -- your home page. I’ll show you what ProStores does by default and the options you have available to easily configure elements that have the biggest impact on search engine optimization (SEO). Remember - natural search is one of the best ways to get more traffic to your web store.
The title of your home page is the most important SEO element in your store. It appears in the top left corner of the browser anytime the page is displayed. It's also the content in the clickable link on a search engine results page (SERP). Ideally, it should convey what your page is about. Since it will be displayed as a clickable link, it should be readable but also contain keywords that convey the most pertinent information about the page.
ProStores Default Behavior - ProStores sets the home page title to the store name followed by the page name. For example, if my web store’s name is ‘JNW Computer’, the page title would be set to ‘JNW Computer Home Page’.
Overriding the Page Title - ProStores provides an editable field that allows you to easily customize the home page title. Log in to Store Administration, browse to Marketing > Traffic Generation in the left nav, then click the Search Optimization link. Enter your custom home page title then click ‘Save’. When you go to your storefront, you will now see your new page title in the upper left corner of the browser window.
This is the text that appears in the search engine results as a summary of the page. The meta description should contain a clear and readable summary of the content of the page, and to some degree, your full store. Ultimately, it could influence a shopper to choose your link on a SERP!
